Establishing Operations
In 2024 the opportunity for the SEEDS Energy Cooperative to advance its mission was identified through an opportunity to establish its headquarters in a small neighborhood recovering from the devastating 2021 Marshall Fire. Following years of due diligence performed by the founder of the SEEDS Energy Cooperative the timing to deliver a public service became more and more apparent as the vulnerabilities to grid power outages increased. More frequent power outages have been caused by severe weather events or efforts to mitigate wildfire liability since the Marshall Fire event. On April 6, 2024 Xcel Energy disconnected power service to a large service area for three consecutive days impacting Superior, Louisville, unincorporated Boulder County and portions of the City of Boulder Colorado. Since the April 6th event Xcel Energy has disconnected electric power on at least three more occasions due to high wind, and more wildfires which creates disproportionate impacts and poses greater vulnerability to residents of lower incomes.
Solution to an unmet need in Resilient Energy and Attainable Housing
The SEEDS Energy Cooperative identified the opportunity to create a micro-grid building and potentially a micro-grid neighborhood in Superior Colorado. This future planned micro-grid neighborhood will serve as critical first steps in establishing the utility companies administrative office in a location that is commercially zoned and offers a high level of visibility, and walkable access to the site from the nearby RTD bus rapid transit center within 1/4 mile of the site. Coincidentally, this location also meets the definition of the new Colorado House Bill 24 - 1313 for supporting increased density for housing located at (TOD) Transit Oriented Development sites.
